                                  What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic application of hypnosis. It is a powerful, influential communication, which utilizes both conscious and subconscious resources for healing and growth. The practice of hypnosis began thousands of years ago, and it has been used since in many forms and contexts (religion, healing, guided imagery, relaxation, yoga, NLP etc.). Hypnotherapy uses various means to activate and strengthen the person, through harnessing the mind's full capacities - mainly in the trance-state. Trance is a natural state, in which change-work is much more effective and elegant. We experience Trance-states every day in various forms of self-absorption or altered perception. Trance is a hyper-attentive state, which usually involves relaxation and self-absorption. In Trance, the ability to communicate with inner processes is enhanced and intensified. The Hypnotherapist is guiding the client into trance; thereafter, the client and therapist work together to induce the desirable changes and to internalize them. Unlike Stage hypnosis, Hypnotherapy is first and foremost a THERAPY, aiming at the improvement of the client's well being. Make sure the therapist you are seeing is well trained and experienced.

Will I lose Control?

Do we give up control of our minds during a movie? Of course not. Hypnotherapy is about having more choices in life - you can choose to accept the suggestions, but you can always choose not to. In-fact, during trance you will experience more control over your body-mind and spirit than in your everyday life. Throughout the history of hypnosis, many people (mainly stage hypnotists) contributed to the myth of mind-control. However, it takes a lot of control to let go. Your body and mind are the strongest bodyguards and will help you to stay in as much control you need. Should you feel uncomfortable with the therapist, either try to discuss it with him or her, or find another therapist, with whom you are comfortable.

Will I forget anything said?

Total amnesia is not likely to occur. Nevertheless, since trance is a different state of consciousness, the access to that information outside trance is sometimes difficult. However, special suggestions can be given to remember the session.

Will I fall asleep?

Hypnosis is not sleep. Natural sleep is measurably different than hypnotic trance. However, trance usually involves deep relaxation, in which conscious movements are not likely to occur and breathing patterns change. The hypnotized clients might look as they are asleep, but they only deeply relaxed.

The Hypnotherapy Sessions

The first session is usually a consultation session. Together with the therapist, a course of treatment will be decided upon, and you would also have a chance to ask questions. Thereafter, the typical session will involve sitting comfortably on a chair, while engaging in imagery-work. However, since the primary goal of the session is to bring about change, other means can be takes to achieve than goal - such as homework, breathing patterning, body-awareness and more. You are always an active participant in the session, and not merely a passive recipient. You will be guided into trance and be assisted in utilizing it for your own benefits. The average session time is between 60-90 minutes (initial consultation is often longer than the preceding sessions). The number of sessions changes with the nature of the problem and the person. However, hypnotherapy is usually a goal-oriented, quick and elegant therapy.

The Techniques

These are some of the therapeutic approaches in hypnotherapy:

  • Active imagery and Guided visualization: The language of unconscious processes differs from conscious, logical thought. Activating the sensual communication channels via imagery and visualization helps to encourage unconscious processes, to occupy the conscious while change-work is done, and to intensify the trance experience.

  • Breathing patterning: Different patterns of breathing tap into different states of mind and altered states. During hypnotherapy sessions, the therapist might choose to use your breathing both to initiate trace and to utilize it. Anyone who experienced meditation, yoga or prayer will acknowledge the power of breathing patterning.
  • Ericksonian Hypnosis: Named after the renowned psychiatrist and hypnotherapist Milton H. Erickson, Ericksonian hypnosis is application of complex, indirect techniques. Ericksonian hypnosis recognizes the power on unconscious processes, and its major characteristic is flexibility: using whatever applicable to bring about change.
  • Goal-oriented meditation: For those experienced with meditation, Hypnotherapy can be a well-known territory. The therapist can work together with the client from within a meditative state, incorporating deeper healing processes.
  • Mental Rehearsing: When we use our imagination, we activate the same neural-paths that are active when the genuine act is taken. Mental rehearsing is an extremely effective method to expertise and perfect body-techniques, concentration, memory (both cognitive and kinesthetic memory) and performance. Mental rehearsing is especially useful to players and musicians, athletes, artist and performers. It is also a good way to resolve 'creative blocks'.
  • Metaphor therapy: Metaphor therapy is one of the most influential and effective approaches in hypnotherapy. It is a subtle conversation with your unconscious mind, when what appears to be a nice story becomes the theme in the change-work. The use of the client's resources such as creativity, life experiences and imagination is the core of Metaphor therapy.
  • Regression and parts therapy: Since our unconscious mind is not spatially or temporally organized, regression therapy can effect the present through investigation, clarification and reinterpretation of the past. In Trance-state, the ability to recall memories is higher and can be more vivid then usually. Parts therapy is the utilization of the psychological phenomenon of dissociation. It is a creative setting which is mainly effective for habit control and deeper analysis.
  • Relaxation techniques: The core of many hypnotherapeutic approaches is the initial reduction of stress levels. Concentration and relaxation are both unpracticed skills in our society. The experience of deep relaxation is beneficial by itself, and is further used in the therapeutic context.
  • Self hypnosis: Many therapists claim that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Whether this argument is true or not, learning self hypnosis is an invaluable essence to clients. It allows them to practice change-work outside the therapy room, to enhance and support the therapeutic achievement, and to relax. Self-hypnosis is often taught to help the clients help themselves - and take the credit for that!
  • Stress-management techniques: Many clients, along with other complaints or targets, suffer from high levels of stress. Stress is a major component in almost every human ailment and applying stress management techniques will ease many symptoms. Even organic pain is perceived through our mind, and pain management is possible exactly thanks to this fact.

Various methods of Inner-journey / dream-work: More healing oriented, hypnotherapy can be a journey for self-exploration and self-healing. When appropriate, deep processes of inner-journeys or dream-work can be taken. Therapeutic processes which use that energetic-healing cycles are of great advantage to the spiritual creative clients.
